Manager of Finance and Operations, Boston

LOCUST WALK IS LOOKING FOR A DYNAMIC AND RESPONSIBLE MANAGER OF FINANCE AND OPERATIONS

Locust Walk helps build biopharma companies through transformative transactions.  We’re an eleven-year-old advisory firm based in Boston, San Francisco, Asia and Europe with clients throughout the world.  We are growing rapidly and to help us with this growth we’re currently seeking a dynamic Manager of Finance and Operations with prior public accounting and professional services experience.

Why is this role potentially just right for you?

This position is for a critical member of the Finance Team to partner and collaborate with members of the Leadership Team to help manage the Finance function.  This person will utilize accounting and finance skills to ensure smooth operations of the organization, in addition to successfully managing the oversight of the financial systems and administrative operations.

A week in the life for this role?

This role will perform mission critical tasks to ensure a streamlined & efficient finance process.  On a week-to-week basis this person will:

  • Managing the core accounting and finance business operations, including A/R, A/P and payroll
  • Oversight of financial accounting and reporting software systems and/or ERP systems
  • Work with the COO and VP of Finance to coordinate and supervise daily operations
  • Assist in developing and implementing plans and goals for the department
  • Ensure compliance with regulations and internal policies
  • Manage & advise on the monthly budgeting and monitoring of expenses
  • Create reports and submit them to the COO, Director of Finance or other executives
  • Own the preparation and consolidation of the monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements for Locust Walk and its related entities

  • Assist the COO, Director of Finance & Operations and other key members of the Leadership Team with financial planning budgeting, case flow, and policy matters related to Finance and Operations.

What is our culture?

We are not a typical investment bank or consulting firm that puts in 100 hour weeks burning through employees at a fast rate.  However, we also are not a typical company that only works 9 to 5, punching the clock.  Instead, we have a high-performance culture that rewards creative solutions to daily challenges, as well as a strong work ethic.  We certainly work hard and are all in the office between 8:30 and 6:00pm daily unless traveling.  That said, we value family and make our time with them a priority.  Going back online after dinner is common to get our jobs done.

Key career background & experience for this position?

  • Business or Accounting degree mandatory, a master’s in business administration is preferred
  • CPA preferred
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience with an external accounting and audit firm and/or in-house finance team in a high-growth business or professional services company.
  • Proven track record of success working in a growing organization
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Successful track record within accounting and finance:
  • Prior public accounting experience
  • Fluency with Excel and QuickBooks, as well as cloud-based ERP systems such as MS Office 365 & MS Dynamics
  • Experience with third party payroll processors & employee benefits vendors (Paychex, HPHC)
  • Strong communication skills and comfort speaking directly with vendors, clients and leadership team members
  • Experience in the professional services industry. We operate in an environment like other professional services firms such as investment banks and management consulting firms. Experiences in these or similar organizations will provide you with a good understanding of how we operate, best practices, and learnings you can contribute to our organization.  Someone who has helped scale a similar company will be highly valued.
  • Small firm experience. We’re a small but nimble global organization that operates as a global firm.  While experience in larger corporate frameworks will be valuable in bringing additional systems, organization and consistency into our firm, an understanding and experience in a smaller growth environment is critical for success.
  • Passion for operational excellence. Whether dealing with finance, project management and other similar activities, this person needs to have 4 things:
    • Passion for the role
    • Desire to create structure and systems that are “suitable weight” to our size
    • Curiosity, an innate drive to figure out “how things work”
    • The ability to work well with other members of the operating team – talent management, IT, marketing, etc
  • Finally, this person needs to be a self-starter looking to influence and drive the future of Locust Walk. We’re looking for a high-integrity individual with a solid academic pedigree who puts the Firm’s interests first and is transparent in their communications.  A poised professional who effectively collaborates with other team members, clients and prospective partners and displays self-awareness, compassion, and especially a desire to have fun and use humor as both a relief valve and tool.

Prior positions of responsibility that might be good experience for this role?

Three to five years or more of accounting experience is a prerequisite.  If you held one of the below positions of responsibility, you might have generated the knowledge required to be successful in this role.  However, this does not mean that if you haven’t had any of the titles below, you’re not qualified:
