VP of Finance and Operations

LOCUST WALK IS LOOKING FOR AN EXPERIENCED AND DYNAMIC VP OF FINANCE AND OPERATIONS TO JOIN OUR TEAM.

Reports to:  Managing Partner

Office:  Boston, MA; must currently reside in the Boston metro area or be willing to relocate there before starting; must have U.S. Citizenship or Visa

If you are looking to build your career with a fast-growing professional services firm, with upside potential both in responsibility and compensation, we’re looking for you.  You will manage both the financial function as a controller level position in addition to oversight of the administrative operations in partnership with the Managing Partner.  We need someone who can help us scale the business.

A week in the life for this role?

The focus for this role is to own the strategy and oversight for the operations functions for the Firm with a primary focus on preparation of the monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements for Locust Walk and its related entities.  As we continue to grow, so will our complexity.  He or she will work closely with the Managing Directors and will be responsible for maintaining the Firm’s budget and revenue forecasts, financial reporting and analysis including various dashboards and the annual audit process.  The coming migration from QuickBooks Enterprise to Microsoft Dynamics 365 ERP coupled with projections on the expected value of each client and associated project-based P&L is integral to the success of the business.  This person will also oversee the bookkeeping, marketing, operations, and compliance functions (each with their own headcount), coordinating and leading the strategy for the operations function so the Firm runs smoothly and can scale with less involvement by the Managing Partner.

We are not a typical investment bank or consulting firm that puts in 100 hour weeks burning through employees at a fast rate.  However, we also are not a typical company that only works 9 to 5, punching the clock.  Instead, we have a high-performance culture that rewards creative solutions to daily challenges, as well as a strong work ethic.  We certainly work hard, and are all in the office between 8:30 and 6:00pm daily unless traveling.  That said, we value family and make our time with them a priority.  Going back online after dinner is common to get our jobs done.

Key career background & experience for this position?

  • Successful track record within accounting and finance:
    • Prior public accounting experience
    • Fluency with Excel and QuickBooks as well as cloud-based ERP systems for a migration
    • Integrity: someone who values truth, trust and people
  • Experience in the professional services industry. We operate in an environment like other professional services firms such as investment banks and management consulting firms. Experiences in these or similar organizations will provide you with a good understanding of how we operate, best practices, and learnings you can contribute to our organization.  Someone who has helped scale a similar company will be highly valued.
  • Small firm experience. We’re a small but nimble global organization that operates as a global firm.  While experience in larger corporate frameworks will be valuable in bringing additional systems, organization and consistency into our firm, an understanding and experience in a smaller growth environment is critical for success.
  • Passion for operational excellence. Whether dealing with finance, operations, project management and other similar activities, this person needs to have 3 things:
    • Passion for the role;
    • Desire to create structure and systems that are “suitable weight” to our size; and
    • Curiosity, an innate drive to figure out “how things work.”

Associate, MedTech

A week in the life for this role?

The main focuses for the associate is to play a key role in leading firm’s engagements and to participate in practice development activities.  Our engagements range from M&A transactions and financings to strategic consulting and commercial assessments.  Our associates work with a Vice President and analyst to drive execution and closing of transformational deals.  The associate is responsible for leading execution and overseeing deliverables and analysis generated by analysts, identifying and managing discussions with target partners/investors, and supporting deal negotiations and closing.  They conduct outreach to potential partners/investors and play an active role in generating interest in and concluding a deal.  The associate is often tasked with managing all aspects of the day-to-day execution of a client engagement, including leading update calls with the client and overseeing all aspects of the analyst’s work.  Practice development activities, including participation at conferences and networking events and building relationships with industry peers and prospective clients, are essential to furthering our growth.  An associate will help with pitch materials and prepare thought pieces for our marketing materials.  Our senior team deal is dedicated to the professional growth of our associates.  Each engagement provides a new learning opportunity.

Office Coordinator

This position is the key operations administrator in the San Francisco (SF) office and the primary operations administrative coordinator with the Boston and other Locust Walk offices.  She/he will support the SF Managing Director and will be the culture link to ensure a consistent experience for the team from supplies, facilities, data base management, logistics, team outings and office environment perspective.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide high level administrative support for the SF Managing Director
  • SF office ambassador to greet clients and perform meeting coordination
  • Logistics:
    • Ensure that systems are operational in conjunction with IT support; coordinate such support as appropriate
    • Procurement of office and IT equipment
    • Organize and distribute mail, scan to other offices as needed
