Controller, Boston

Core job responsibilities:

  • Act as the connection between finance, senior leadership, and business units
  • Responsible for modeling and overseeing the firm’s budget and revenue forecasts, financial reporting and analysis including various dashboards and the annual audit process
  • Act as the cross-functional connection for tracking and analytics of client projects
  • Prepare and consolidate monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements for Locust Walk, its related entities and integration of international (Japan, Europe, etc.) reporting
  • Manage local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
  • Oversee all of accounting including month-end closing process and related reporting, revenue recognition, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, taxes, etc.
  • Establish and maintain internal controls and policies to prevent inaccuracies in financial statements and other financial reports, while also keeping accounting practices in step with company growth
  • Oversight of daily banking operations such as bank transfers, wire transfers and ACH processing
  • Assist leadership team with special projects as needed
  • Update financial / accounting processes and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable rules, laws, and regulations as necessary
  • 401(k) pension plan oversight and management

 

Job Requirements:

  • High level technical accounting skills:
    • Act as the internal expert to advise on technical accounting issues and provide interpretation and application of accounting procedures and principles in accordance with GAAP and regulatory tax requirements
    • Advise team on the handling of non-routine transactions
    • Ensure accurate intercompany reporting and consolidated reports for all Locust Walk entities
    • Responsible for oversight of all transactions on the GL
    • Can understands LW business model and translate in a detailed budget/forecast in Excel and/or ERP

Professional and Academic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Finance; 8+ years of progressive experience in an accounting/finance management role
  • Professional accounting certification, including CPA, CMA, CGA, or CA

We are currently in the process of building a full-service global life science transaction firm that can advise companies on their strategy, help with transactions and capital raises via our SPAC. Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide high level support for MDs/SVPs on current projects and new business initiatives
    • Assist MDs/SVPs with investor outreach for current projects
    • Construct and maintain investor contact logs and databases detailing investor preferences
    • Create investor profiles detailing firm background and investment history
    • Help MDs/SVPs prepare for various investor conferences throughout the year

Significant experience in life science business development and strategy is required.

We are looking for someone with at least 7-12 years of relevant work experience, including experience leading teams and developing new business. Transaction experience in an industry role is a requirement, particularly in corporate or business development. Our ideal candidate will also have experience from within a top-tier life sciences strategy firm or practice and with a proven record of accomplishment building new business and developing client relationships. We are seeking an individual with an undergraduate degree from a high-quality institution, preferably in a scientific discipline. A Master’s degree such as an MBA or terminal degree is a plus but not a requirement, with the right work experience.

Relevant skills and background required:  The candidate must be able to demonstrate the following set of skills:

  • Strong track record of executing strategic transactions (licensing and M&A from a buy-side and/or sell-side perspective). Deal sheets are required
  • Experience overseeing partnership discussions, managing partner/target/acquirer interactions, and overseeing the creation of high-quality PowerPoint presentations
  • 2 years of Life Science consulting or experience with corporate development strategy
  • Solid understanding of financial modelling, including full P&L and DCF models and company and asset valuation

Experience in the life science consulting industry a requirement. We are looking for someone who is currently working in a life science consulting firm but is frustrated by not seeing their projects through to execution. Handing the client a deliverable and wishing them good luck isn’t satisfying. Additionally, if you are in a BD role after finishing at least two years at a life science
consulting firm and miss the intellectual stimulation of working in a fast pace environment on multiple projects but also wants to do deals, this job is for you. The candidate must be able to demonstrate the following set of skills:

• Strong life sciences corporate strategy experience, including: new opportunity prioritization; partnering and M&A strategy; business development and transaction support; asset forecasting and valuation; portfolio management; and commercialization strategy

• Ability to lead project teams, drive strategic recommendations, and act as primary client contact for Strategy and Analytics and transaction execution engagements

• Solid understanding of financial modelling, including at least revenue modeling. Full P&L and discounted cash flow modeling a plus but can be learned on the job; ability to lead trainings on modeling and large database analysis

• Strong communication skills and comfort presenting in front of company management, Boards of Directors, and speaking directly with physicians and other key opinion leaders

A week in the life for this role?

The main focuses for the Analyst are to play a key role in executing the Firm’s engagements and to participate in business development activities. Our engagements range from business development, M&A transactions, strategic consulting to commercial assessments. Our Analysts assist in identifying target partners, maintaining contact logs and board update materials, producing marketing materials and financial analysis and modeling in support of negotiations. Analysts will receive significant responsibility and ownership over their work including multiple opportunities to present to both the firm and clients. Commercial assessments also require discussions with key opinion leaders, leading analysis of secondary sources, full P&L models, and production of full commercial decks. Business development activities are essential to furthering our growth. An Analyst will contribute to maintaining and updating databases in support of Locust Walk’s mission as well as preparing thought pieces and analytics for our marketing materials.

Responsibilities:

  • The Summer Analyst supports the Deal Team on active transactions and will work on projects which provide exposure to the biopharma, medtech, and financing business development landscape
  • Play a key role in executing the firm’s engagements including but not limited to:
    • Business development and strategic transactions, including buy-side and sell-side partnership agreements in M&A
    • Capital markets and financings, including venture backed private rounds and IPO advisory
    • Corporate development and strategic analysis, including commercial assessments and portfolio prioritization
  • Key activities for transaction work includes:
    • Financial analysis and valuation modeling in support of deal negotiations
    • Revenue and P&L modeling
    • Leading analysis of secondary sources
    • Due diligence
    • Discussions with key opinion leaders
    • Precedent transaction analysis
    • Production of marketing materials (e.g., product teasers, presentations)
    • Development of commercial presentation
    • Identification of target partners
    • Maintaining contact logs and board update materials
  • Contributing to practice development activities including but not limited to
