Current Opportunities

Senior Strategy & Analytics Professional

LOCUST WALK IS LOOKING FOR AN EXPERIENCED SENIOR STRATEGY AND ANALYTICS PROFESSIONAL TO JOIN OUR STRATEGY AND ANALYTICS TEAM

Locust Walk is a global life science transaction firm. Our integrated team-based approach across capabilities, geographies, and industry segments delivers the right products, the right partners, and the most attractive sources of capital to get the right deals done for biopharma and medtech companies.  Locust Walk is the only firm to integrate strategy, market analytics, and transaction capabilities from both biopharma and medtech perspectives on a global scale.  We have offices in Boston, San Francisco, Tokyo, and London with clients throughout the world.  We are growing rapidly and to help us with this growth, we are adding an associate to our Boston or San Francisco office that will lead client engagements and materially support our practice development activities.

Why is this role potentially just right for you?

If you are looking to build upon your client relationships and experiences with a fast-growing, entrepreneurial firm with significant upside potential, we’re looking for you. We are Life Sciences business and corporate development professionals creating broad impact by helping a diverse client base build their companies through strategy, planning and execution of transaction assignments. As such, we provide a more dynamic environment, richer experience and opportunity to grow professionally than in a typical firm.

A week in the life for this role?

This is a critical role in the firm, helping to lead our Strategy and Analytics practice, which helps clients strategize, plan and prepare for execution of product portfolio investments, partnerships, M&A and financings. As a senior leader in this practice, you will help shape the direction of the practice and processes as we continue to expand our global presence.

This role entails a balance of revenue generation and engagement oversight responsibilities. We will expect and enable you to leverage our and your relationship networks to drive new business and expand client relationships. You will be responsible for leading need identification, proposal development and presentations to clients, with an emphasis on closing new business and transitioning clients from strategy work to deal execution.

You will also oversee high quality delivery of a range of project types by engagement leaders and teams. You will play a key role on client engagements by leading the team to identify issues, form hypotheses, develop work plans, design and conduct analyses, synthesize conclusions into recommendations, and ultimately help clients choose how partnering, M&A and financing can drive their growth, profitability and shareholder value. Our teams will benefit from your strong repertoire of strategy tools and experiential insights, and your ability to understand, represent and address clients’ needs and perspectives.

As a senior member of our team you will contribute to firm strategy and management, for example, business development and marketing; recruiting, training, and performance management; knowledge management and thought leadership. We will look to you to work collaboratively with us to create a strong team, actively mentor and develop people, manage conflict effectively, and develop trust among a highly motivated team.

To assure seamless client relationships and engagement delivery, you will coordinate closely with colleagues in our Strategic Transactions and Capital Markets teams. A key measure of our success is completed transactions.  Providing an integrated corporate development offering to clients is the main way that we achieve this. While you will not be expected to actively lead deal teams, you will have opportunities to participate in and help drive success of deal processes.

Key career background and experience for this position?

This person needs to live the Locust Walk values.  We’re looking first for people who fit our culture.  Culture is very important to us and that fit is critical.  A brief overview of our core values and who we’re looking for is below:

  • Commitment to the success of others: Someone who is we before me and low ego but confident. Team players are a must, especially those who are committed to mentoring those below them so we can all rise up together
  • Open and courageous communications: We want people with opinions and who know how to communicate them internally and externally in the appropriate fashion. We share with each other our candid feedback so we can continue to learn and grow
  • Growth mindset: Someone who has a thirst for knowledge and is constantly learning
  • Entrepreneurial spirit: We want someone who isn’t afraid to push hard and make a few mistakes, but only making them once. A small company person who appreciates speed and growth and isn’t afraid to help shape and build the company they want to be part of
  • Enjoy the ride: Work hard, play hard isn’t our mantra. We work hard but try to integrate fun and interesting things into the core of what we do.  We all have unique interests and find common ways of sharing that with each other.  A life outside of work is important

Significant experience in life science strategy and business development is required. We are looking for someone with at least 10 years of relevant work experience, including experience leading teams and developing new business. Our ideal candidate will have experience in a leadership role within a top-tier life sciences strategy firm or practice, with a proven track record building new business and developing client relationships. Transaction experience in an industry role is a plus, for example, corporate strategy, business development, or search and evaluation. Whether you are a strategy consultant who wants to see transaction recommendations through to execution, or in an industry role and seeking the intellectual stimulation of working in a fast pace environment but enjoy deal-making, this job is for you.

We are seeking an individual with an undergraduate degree from a high-quality institution, preferably in a scientific discipline. A Master’s degree such as an MBA or terminal degree is a plus but not a requirement, with the right work experience.

Additionally, you must be able to demonstrate the following set of skills:

  • Strong life sciences corporate strategy experience, including partnering, M&A and financing strategy; portfolio strategy and prioritization; new inorganic opportunity identification and prioritization; business development and transaction support; new product commercialization strategy; revenue forecasting and valuation
  • Ability to lead project teams, drive strategic recommendations, and act as primary client contact for Strategy and Analytics proposals and engagements
  • Skilled at defining the scope, approach and methodology for strategy engagements, including determining staffing requirements and associated fees
  • Exceptional ability to frame strategic issues and translate strategic insights to actionable recommendations
  • Ability to partner with clients to gain alignment and motivate action, with success simultaneously leading multiple client engagements while delivering exceptional client service
  • Demonstrated track record of developing thought leadership and new service lines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and comfort presenting to client leadership teams and Boards of Directors
  • Wide breadth of experience across disease areas, industry sectors and treatment modalities
  • Solid understanding of financial modeling and accounting
  • Familiar with suite of industry knowledge resources for market and deal analytics
  • Leader and developer of team members

Passion for life sciences and transactions. At our core, we strive to help each of our clients achieve success through strategic insights and deal making.  While we don’t expect someone to have prior transaction experience, a strong interest and desire to “do deals” is important for this role where everything we do from a strategy and execution perspective revolves around transactions.
