Current Opportunities

Vice President, Biopharma, San Francisco

LOCUST WALK IS LOOKING FOR AN EXPERIENCED AND DYNAMIC VICE PRESIDENT TO JOIN OUR BIOPHARMA TEAM

Locust Walk helps build life science companies through transformative transactions.  We’re a global life science transaction firm with offices in Boston, San Francisco, Asia and Europe with clients throughout the world.  Our biopharma team specializes in working with emerging and growth companies to execute transformative transactions whether they be strategic licensing, acquisition, or fundraising.  What differentiates us from other advisors is we are company builders with operating experience, are global with a local physical presence and have a team-oriented culture.   We are growing rapidly and to help us with this growth, we are adding an associate to our Boston office that will lead client engagements and materially support our practice development activities.

Why is this role potentially just right for you?

If you are looking for long-term opportunity to leverage your deal experience with a fast-growing global transaction firm, we’re looking for you.  This role requires a growth mindset to integrate Locust Walk’s sales and execution best practices with your already proven success, so you can progress on the path to Managing Director.  We have great people, have a lot of fun together and make an important impact on our industry.  To be clear, we are not looking for people who want a way-station on their way to CBO or CEO in a life science company.

A week in the life for this role?

The Vice President plays a lead role in executing the firm’s engagements and actively participates in the firm’s new business development activities.  Our engagements range from licensing, M&A, and financing transactions as well as strategic and market analytics projects.  The Vice President leads the deal execution with support from an associate and/or analyst from beginning to end with little to no supervision from a Managing Director.  Locust Walk’s new business development activities are essential to furthering our growth and selling is an important piece of the weekly puzzle.  After being trained on the firm’s messages and how to bring in business, a Vice President will represent Locust Walk at major partnering events, prepare thought pieces and leverage their personal and profession relationships in support of Locust Walk’s mission.

What is our culture?

We look for entrepreneurial, growth-oriented individuals who are committed to the success of others.  We are not a typical cut-throat investment bank or consulting firm that puts in 100-hour weeks burning through employees at a fast rate only committed to your own success.  We also are not a typical company that only works 9 to 5, punching the clock.  We have a high-performance team-based culture that rewards creative solutions to daily challenges.  Locust Walk offers a respectable work-life balance within the context of a transaction focused professional services firm.  We are typically in the office during business hours daily unless traveling but also value our family and friends making our time with them a priority in the evenings.  Senior deal team professionals travel 10-20%, depending on client needs and industry events.  We eat lunch together as much as possible, have weekly Locust Walk Café happy hours as a team and enjoy occasional company outings.  We are open and honest with each other and transparent in our dealings including information about the health of the business.  All our team members enjoy the ride! Read more about Our Culture here.

Key career background and experience for this position?

  • This person needs to live the Locust Walk values. We’re looking for a high-integrity individual who is committed to the success of others and is open and courageous in their communications.  A poised professional who exhibits a growth mindset with an entrepreneurial spirit.  He/she must have a positive attitude and enjoy the ride.
  • Deal and Operating experience. While required, many of Locust Walk’s senior deal leadership have experience working in the industry.  A deal sheet in industry can make up for a lack of finance and/or professional service experience.  Must have led at least 5 closed transactions where candidate played a material and preferably lead role in closure.
  • Sales experience. All our senior deal team members have either a history of sales experience or strong interest in and personality for selling.  Promotion to Managing Director will depend on the ability to bring in new clients and thus sales is an important part of the growth opportunity.  Sales is also important for selling our clients’ stories.
  • Mentorship and leadership experience. As a learning and growing organization, everyone has a mentor and mentors others.  We need people who are committed to mentoring and building the junior team.  Experience managing teams is critical to provide leverage and skill building opportunities for the junior team.
  • Professional Services experience. While we have clear points of difference, we operate in a similar manner to investment banks and management consulting firms.  Experience in these firms will provide you with an understanding of how we operate, best practices, and learnings you can contribute to our organization.  While not a requirement, such experience is helpful.
  • Relevant skills and background required: The candidate must be able to demonstrate the following set of skills:
    • 7 – 18 years of relevant experience including deals as a material part of their track record and career interests
    • Strong track record of executing strategic (licensing and M&A from a buy-side and sell-side perspective) and/or financing (private placement, IPOs and public offerings) transactions
    • Solid understanding of financial modelling, including full P&L and DCF models
    • Strong communication skills and comfort presenting in front of company management, Board, and speaking directly with physicians and other key opinion leaders
    • Excellent written and oral presentation skills
    • Either a proven track record of working with and managing teams or relevant leadership skills that demonstrate an ability to do so successfully
    • MBA from top tier institution preferred if no prior finance experience
    • Advanced or undergraduate degree in life sciences is also a plus
  • Be Interesting. We want team members who are interested in what we’re doing and interesting as people.  Playing a sport, preferably a team sport in high school, college or beyond shows a level of commitment to something greater than yourself and discipline.  Joining social clubs in college or beyond demonstrate gregariousness and personality.  Having interests outside of work and family make for a well-rounded individual who is fun to be around

Prior experience that would be successful in this role?

A banking or consulting background with a focus on biopharma is strongly preferred.  However, this does not mean that if you haven’t worked for this type of team, you’re not qualified.  Previous job titles below are relevant for this position.  Read between the lines, for intent and not literally:

  • Senior/Vice President of Corporate/Business Development for small to mid-size biopharma; Senior/Executive Directors of Corporate/Business Development are also welcome to apply assuming they have sufficient deal and leadership experience
  • Vice President at an investment bank in healthcare banking; Senior Associates on the doorstep of a promotion are also welcome to apply
  • Engagement Manager at consulting firm focused on biopharma with other industry and deal experience required

How much could someone earn in this role?

Our firm has a multi-part compensation structure:

  • We pay a competitive base with other transaction focused professional services firms
  • Every person at Locust Walk has goals and will be eligible to earn a bonus based on exceptional individual, business unit and firm performance that encourages both accountability as well as team work and helping to grow the overall business. The bonus is typically a much larger portion of the total compensation package than a typical operating company
  • We offer a great competitive Total Rewards package which includes health, dental, and vision, as well as other great competitive benefits
  • We offer and contribute to each employee’s 401k

Event Manager, Boston

LOCUST WALK IS LOOKING FOR A DYNAMIC AND CREATIVE EVENT MANAGER TO JOIN OUR TEAM

BioBreak is a non-profit organization whose mission is to connect the life science ecosystem.  It holds members-only networking events where biotech, pharma, medtech, diagnostic and investor executives build relationships, source transactions, and learn about other companies in their area.  BioBreak also runs the CBO Forum which connects Chief Business Officers for life science companies in content rich discussions.  BioBreak also runs the Family Office BioForum, which is an exclusive opportunity for high net worth investors and family offices to engage in a substantive conversation about investing in the Life Sciences.  We also recently formed a women’s networking group call SWITCH.  This person will play a key role in the growth of the Company by organizing and executing various events to create buzz and a high value brand.

Why is this role potentially just right for you?

If you want to help build a brand globally, are passionate about relationship building and the life sciences and think that putting together impactful events is fulfilling, we’re looking for you in a full-time capacity.

A week in the life for this role?

The focus for this role is to drive attendance and sponsorship for our existing events and to expand the scope of the organization nationally and internationally to other life science hubs.  The logistics behind organizing each event is also a critical part of the job and will play an important role during day-to-day activities.  This person will support the Board’s efforts to effectively build connections in the life science community.  He or she will work closely with the Board Members and/or Regional Organizers and will be responsible for the organization and the execution of the events.

A typical week’s work might include any of the following—reaching out to new and existing sponsors to expand their support, organize our regional and national events including marketing, sponsorship agreements, budgeting, event logistics, nametags and check-in, helping to expand to new regions, and help with website revamp.

What is our culture?

The organization has been around since 2006 and has been mostly volunteer driven to date.  We have a leader on a part-time basis but need someone full-time to drive the organization to new heights.  Since this person is going to be based in Locust Walk’s Boston office, the culture of the firm is collegial with five core values:  Commitment to the success of others; Open and courageous communication; Growth mindset; Entrepreneurial spirit; and Enjoy the ride.  This is not your typical non-profit job that works 9 to 5, punching the clock.  We have a high-performance culture that rewards creative solutions to daily challenges.  BioBreak offers work-life balance with support from members of the Locust Walk marketing department.  We are all in the office during business hours daily unless traveling, but also value our family and friends making our time with them a priority.  This position will have some travel to the various BioBreak events around the country and perhaps even around the world.

  • Experience in event planning.  The organization is fundamentally events driven and we need someone who has great attention to detail in producing high quality events.  Experiences in these or similar roles will provide you with a good understanding of how we operate, best practices, and learnings you can contribute to our organization.  Individuals with marketing and basic knowledge of accounting experience would also be a good fit.  Examples of things needed to be a successful event planner include:
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with regional partners
  • Manage existing and develop new sponsor relationships
  • Manage and execute sponsorship agreements
  • Budgeting and planning
  • Design and maintain promotional materials
  • Manage and maintain marketing list
  • Design and execute email outreaches
  • Maintain and further develop social media presence
  • Maintain current member database and find new ways to attract new members
  • Website maintenance
  • Small firm experience.  We’re a small organization that has many regions but limited resources.  While experience in larger corporate frameworks will be valuable in bringing additional expertise into our organization, an understanding and experience in a smaller environment with knowledge of how to scale is helpful for success.  This is a “company of one” for now so personal responsibility is essential.
  • Passion for building relationships. Whether dealing with potential members or sponsors, external service providers or internal team members, this person needs to have 3 things:
  • Passion for the role, the life science industry, people and performance. Is self-motivated, positive and able to work and prioritize in a fast-paced environment
  • Desire to build BioBreak and future growth potential via building relationships, and
  • Creativity, an innate ability to see and create new opportunities

  • Pro-active and detail-oriented work ethic.

Prior positions of responsibility that might be good experience for this role?

Any of the positions of responsibility below might have generated the experience required to be successful in this role.  However, this does not mean that if you haven’t had any of the titles below, you’re not qualified.  Read between the lines, for intent and not literally:

  • Head of event planning/conferences
  • Event Coordinator
  • Event Manager

In one word, how might you describe the position?

The “ownership” because this person will be the chief cook and bottle washer and needs to be comfortable with that role.  There is a significant amount of responsibility and ownership over the success of the organization.
