Vice President, Medtech
Howard Hechler joined Locust Walk as Vice President of Medtech in 2019 and brings to Locust Walk more than 15 years of focused life sciences experience in M&A, strategy and operations, medical devices, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, and drug-device combination products. Howard’s unique background and experience allow him to support the growth and extend the reach of the firm’s medical technology practice. Prior to joining Locust Walk, Howard served as Chief Business Officer for PolarityTE, a regenerative medicine company, where he was responsible for business development, marketing, sales, and market access/reimbursement strategies.
Howard began his career as a consultant for biotech-focused Campbell Alliance’s M&A group, where he advised small, medium, and large industry players on a range of deals. He then moved to a publicly-listed tech-focused incubator called XL TechGroup, where he assisted and grew portfolio companies in point-of-care diagnostics, antimicrobials, and cardiac care. Subsequent to his time at XL TechGroup, Howard founded his own life-sciences consulting firm, Obliquity Consulting, where he advised seed-stage companies on commercial strategy and financing. Howard also worked in Business Development for Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals (a subsidiary of Coviden at the time), where he closed multiple co-promotions, financings, and divestitures. Howard then spent five years at Medtronic, running business development for the Surgical Technologies Business Unit ($2B in sales) and leading broad range of acquisitions, divestitures, licenses, distribution deals, and equity investments. Howard also enjoyed a brief stint at Smith & Nephew, where he focused on orthopedics and wound care.
Over his career, Howard has been involved in more than $500M in strategic transactions, and has more than 10 years of experience leading cross-functional teams to develop business cases and C-Suite strategic plans.
Howard graduated cum laude with an AB in Near Eastern Language and Civilizations from Harvard University. He received both his Master of Business Administration and Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia.
He lives in Lexington, MA with his wife Cindy and his 14-year old daughter, Samantha, who is all-too-eager to leave the nest and travel the world as a rock groupie. Howard enjoys reading sci-fi/fantasy, walking his yorkie, and playing poker, but his New Year’s resolution is to take up metalsmithing.
